When the sun sets over the Gran Vía, Madrid doesn’t just transition into night—it comes alive with a second wind that few cities in the world can match. The Spanish capital is legendary for its late-night culture, where dinner starts at 10:00 PM and the energy stays electric until dawn. This summer, that energy is set to reach a fever pitch as one of the world’s biggest icons, The Weeknd, brings his cinematic stadium spectacle to the city. As fans from across Europe descend upon the capital, Madrid transforms into a hub of music, fashion, and pure adrenaline.

The Weeknd: Reshaping the Modern R&B Sound

The Weeknd’s journey from mysterious “dark-R&B” mixtape artist to global pop juggernaut is nothing short of legendary. With his signature blend of 80s synth-pop and moody, noir-inspired lyricism, Abel Tesfaye has fundamentally reshaped the sound of modern music.

Albums like After Hours and Dawn FM aren’t just collections of songs; they are cinematic experiences that explore the themes of heartbreak, isolation, and redemption. In Madrid, fans can expect a visual and auditory feast, featuring a massive stage production that mirrors the haunting, high-gloss aesthetic of his most recent eras. From the soaring high notes of “Save Your Tears” to the record-breaking pulse of “Blinding Lights,” the night promises to be a masterclass in modern performance.

A Madrid Local Touch

While you’re in the city for the “After Hours Til Dawn” tour, make sure to soak in the local culture that makes Madrid so unique. Before heading to the stadium, spend your day exploring the city’s timeless landmarks:

Art & History: Wander through the Prado Museum, home to masterpieces by Velázquez and Goya, or visit the grand Royal Palace.

Relaxation: Take a stroll through the lush Retiro Park, Madrid’s green lung, and enjoy the Crystal Palace.

The Food Scene: You cannot leave without trying churros con chocolate at San Ginés, a savory jamón ibérico plate, or a classic bocadillo de calamares (calamari sandwich) near the Plaza Mayor.

Pro Tip for Travelers

Madrid is a major tourist destination, and the Weeknd’s arrival will only make it busier. To ensure you don’t miss out on the city’s cultural treasures, it is highly recommended to book your museum tickets early to avoid the long queues.

Madrid has officially joined the Formula 1 calendar as the new home of the Spanish Grand Prix. Starting in 2026, the race will take place on a newly constructed hybrid circuit known as Madring, designed to combine the energy of a street race with the performance of a purpose-built track. Whether you’re planning to visit during the inaugural race or in the years to come, here’s everything you need to know about the Formula 1 experience in Madrid.

🏎️ The Track: Madring

The Madring circuit is located in the northeast of Madrid, near the IFEMA exhibition center and Barajas Airport. The layout features 22 turns and stretches over 5.47 kilometers, weaving through city streets and dedicated track sections. Fans can expect a mix of high-speed straights, technical corners, a banked turn, and even a tunnel section. It’s designed to offer thrilling racing, exciting overtaking opportunities, and great visibility for spectators.

The circuit includes grandstands in several key areas, with excellent views of overtaking zones and pit activity. The overall design ensures fans are close to the action—something city circuits are uniquely good at delivering.

🚆 Getting to the Circuit

One of the best parts of attending the race in Madrid is how easy it is to get to the track. The venue is just a few metro stops from the city center, directly connected by public transportation. It’s also close to the airport, making it ideal for international visitors. You won’t need a car—Madrid’s public transport system is fast, affordable, and efficient.

🏁 From Barcelona to Madrid: A New Era

For decades, the Spanish Grand Prix was hosted in Barcelona, but starting with the 2026 season, Madrid has taken over the event. While the Catalunya circuit will still hold its final race in June 2026, the capital is now home to Spain’s only official Formula 1 race. The move marks a new era, with the Madrid race aiming to blend sport and culture in the heart of one of Europe’s most vibrant cities.

Spanish Grand Prix 2026

🌆 What to Do in Madrid During Race Weekend

If you’re coming to Madrid for the Grand Prix, there’s plenty more to experience beyond the race track. Consider arriving a few days early or staying longer to enjoy the city’s top attractions:

Explore Madrid’s museums, including the world-famous Prado, Reina Sofía, and Thyssen-Bornemisza.

Stroll through El Retiro Park, or enjoy tapas and wine in local neighborhoods like La Latina and Malasaña.

Catch a flamenco show, experience a Real Madrid football match at Santiago Bernabéu, or shop along Gran Vía.

Attend concerts and special events happening the same weekend—Madrid is alive with culture year-round.

For a full list of what’s on in the city, visit the Madrid Guide.

🛏️ Find a Hotel – Budget-Friendly or High-End

Need a place to stay during your visit? Use the interactive map below to search for hotels throughout Madrid. You can zoom in and out, compare prices, and choose the perfect location—whether you want to stay near the circuit, in the city center, or somewhere quieter.

You don’t really need an excuse to visit Madrid as the city is so amazing that you should visit it no matter what. The running competition on the last day of the year has been a tradition in Madrid since 1964.

One part of the run is a fun race in which anyone can participate. There is a second race in which only professionals can participate, requiring you to run 10,000 meters in less than 40 minutes (or something like that). You can read more about all the requirements at the website which we refer to further down in the article.

There is also a children’s run on December 23.

Do you remember the story from the Bible in which the three wise men brought presents to the newborn child? That is celebrated in Spain as the three kings march around the city of Madrid on January 5th. And guess what, on January 6th, presents are handed out, much like others are used to on December 24th or December 25th elsewhere in the world.

In the Netherlands, Santa Claus comes to the country on a boat from Spain on the first Saturday after November 11. In Hungary, Santa Claus visits houses and puts candy and other presents in the newly washed shoes on December 6th. In Spain, the big event is the arrival of the three wise men on January 5th followed by presents on January 6.

If you happen to be in Madrid on January 5, you should definitely look out for the parade which starts around 18:30 and lasts until 21:00.

The parade normally moves along the following route.
Paseo de la Castellana (Nuevos Ministerios corner of Plaza San Juan de la Cruz) – Paseo de la Castellana – Plaza del Doctor Gregorio Marañón – Paseo de la Castellana – Glorieta de Emilio Castelar – Paseo de la Castellana – Plaza de Colón – Paseo de Recoletos – Plaza de Cibeles (End of Parade).

Three Kings Parade

Date: January 5

This event also takes place elsewhere in Spain, meaning you can see similar parades in, for example, the city of Barcelona.

Would you like to read about the Christmas markets in Madrid? Or are you looking for information about upcoming concerts or running competitions in Madrid? You can find this and much more in our Madrid calendar.
